The Walkmen are, beyond any doubt, the single best and most innovative band in the world.
They have the best lyricist and the best drummer in the world.
Matt Barrick (the drummer) is probably the best drummer since Keith Moon.
Tweedy/Oberst/Yorke wish they were writing songs like Hamilton Leithauser.
Their hour-long set at Irving Plaza was one of the best musical performances i've ever seen.
I really don't see how the Walkmen can be "overrated" seeing that they get almost no press. This is in part because they are devoted to the music and not the rock star thing.
Some days I can see how they may not be everyone's cup of tea, other days its seems that not liking them is tantamount to not liking the Beatles. One thing is for sure: they don't sound like anything else...I personally think this is because they are way ahead of their time.
To each their own. Had to throw in my $.02. JC and I disagree all the time...after all, I'm the one that considers Blur to be one of the most overrated bands in the history of music.
If the Walkmen are the future of music, please kill me now.
Okay, okay - I guess "universally over-rated" was a bit strong. How about "universally over-rated in indie rock circles"?
The lyrics might be really great. But I cannot like a band just because they have great lyrics. If there's not a great melody to go with them (and as far as I've heard, there's not), then what's the point? If all I wanted was lyrics, I'd just stick to reading poetry.
Dude, are you seriously comparing them to the Beatles? That's strong. I mean, that is a STRONG step-out there, buddy. About the strongest, actually. Surely I'm misreading you.
I don't know, man. Maybe they're just one of those bands that you have to listen to over and over to really "get." I've only actually heard that Walkmen album about twice all the way through. But at this point, I don't have alot of patience for bands that are an acquired taste. Maybe I'm just lazy or have musicADD, but if I don't like it after hearing it a handful of times, I move on.
One for the road: wouldn't Blur have to be
highly rated to be
over-rated? Am I missing the deluge of people who love Blur? Where are they? There's me. And Sam. Maybe Stiles. That's three...
