TOPIC: 3/28 VH1 Save the Music Concert at Irving Plaza

Not sure about the order but here's the setlist from what i remember.

Circus
Me and the Skirts
Exhibit A
That's the Way It's Meant to Be
There's a Million Ways to Sing the Blues
Arcata
Mosis Ptosis
*some song i didn't recognize*
Thursday

They were awesome. The set was too short though. They played for 20 min.! which made me sad... especially since I don't particuarly care for The Walkmen or Ben Kweller. But oh well. It was still worth it. They rocked.

No. Thou dost not.

Actually, truth be told, I do kind of like that one song that was on the Saturn commercial a couple of years ago. But that is literally it.

It's been a long time since a band was so universally over-rated. Probably the last time was...the Strokes.

I'm more upset that you don't care for BK. At least for his older material...

Goodness. I never said BK or The Walkmen suck or anything. I'm just not into them. That's all. I enjoyed BK's set. I had to leave before The Walkmen came on to make my train but I'm sure I would've enjoyed The Walkmen's too. It's just I've never been too into them, and wasn't as excited as I was to see the Features. And the fact that the band I was there to see only played for 20 minutes saddened me. That's all. No need to get upset people.

See, I know people don't care for the walkmen, but I sincerely enjoy them. I take issue with calling them over-rated because I do enjoy them that much. After all, my post was merely a forum-poke, if you will.

The Walkmen are, beyond any doubt, the single best and most innovative band in the world.

They have the best lyricist and the best drummer in the world.

Matt Barrick (the drummer) is probably the best drummer since Keith Moon.

Tweedy/Oberst/Yorke wish they were writing songs like Hamilton Leithauser.

Their hour-long set at Irving Plaza was one of the best musical performances i've ever seen.

I really don't see how the Walkmen can be "overrated" seeing that they get almost no press. This is in part because they are devoted to the music and not the rock star thing.

Some days I can see how they may not be everyone's cup of tea, other days its seems that not liking them is tantamount to not liking the Beatles. One thing is for sure: they don't sound like anything else...I personally think this is because they are way ahead of their time.

To each their own. Had to throw in my $.02. JC and I disagree all the time...after all, I'm the one that considers Blur to be one of the most overrated bands in the history of music.

I consider them overrated because of posts like yours that compare them to the Beatles. I hear this quite often from many many people. That's not a bad thing. I just realized that when you type "a post like yours," it comes off as kinda snarky. No snark. I think you are right about them being ahead of their time and having a good lyricist and drummer. They're just not my cup of tea and the fans that they do have are fairly rabid, which is in turn because they are a really good band. I don't know...it's a vicious cycle.

If the Walkmen are the future of music, please kill me now.

Okay, okay - I guess "universally over-rated" was a bit strong. How about "universally over-rated in indie rock circles"?

The lyrics might be really great. But I cannot like a band just because they have great lyrics. If there's not a great melody to go with them (and as far as I've heard, there's not), then what's the point? If all I wanted was lyrics, I'd just stick to reading poetry.

Dude, are you seriously comparing them to the Beatles? That's strong. I mean, that is a STRONG step-out there, buddy. About the strongest, actually. Surely I'm misreading you.

I don't know, man. Maybe they're just one of those bands that you have to listen to over and over to really "get." I've only actually heard that Walkmen album about twice all the way through. But at this point, I don't have alot of patience for bands that are an acquired taste. Maybe I'm just lazy or have musicADD, but if I don't like it after hearing it a handful of times, I move on.

One for the road: wouldn't Blur have to be highly rated to be over-rated? Am I missing the deluge of people who love Blur? Where are they? There's me. And Sam. Maybe Stiles. That's three...

JC, you summed up my thoughts on the Walkmen to a "T", but, yeah, I think you can only say they're overrated within certain circles. Within those circles, however, they can easily make a case that they're grossly underrated. Of course, they would be wrong. Give me melody over lyrics any day. That's why I prefer Ben Kweller. Of course, both is nice, too.

i love the walkmen. that said, i don't think they are anything like the beatles in any way. they're very dylanesque, and certainly dylan divided people similarly. one thing i can say definitively about the walkmen is that they are passionate, and they care very much about what they are doing. i think you've got to respect that. they're not disingenuous like the strokes, at least. i do understand the position of thinking them overrated, but all good things are, in fact.

i don't think blur are overrated at all. they're brilliant, and they were an innovative and important force in the music scene of the early 90's. i still think they're great.

It's funny because I was having this type of conversation with someone (I think it was ray davies) a few weeks ago about how at first when you buy one, there's only two or three songs on a walkmen album that you'll be interested in, but once you digest the entire album, you end up loving the walkmen.

Oh I would love to see this show.... even if it's only one song.

I think you're right. I saw the comercial last night and it said it was going to be a live broadcast of a bunch of pop bands. They said "and more", but I think it's only for the concert happening that night.

However, I was told that there were VH1 camera crews there, so maybe they'll make an MTV2 special or something.

I heard they attended an official press conference for the event. I think I heard that Katie Holmes was there, too. Sounds pretty surreal...

It's too bad they couldn't put the band name in the caption. Funny enough, they put Matt's name in the caption of his live picture.

I didn't know Evan Dando played with Ben Kweller at that show. Pretty cool. From the looks of BK, though, it looks like he might have a new Drug Buddy.

From what I understand, the features played the first show of the "Live it Loud"/Dentyne tour. This show benefits the Save the Music series, but isn't actually VH-1's Save the Music...I am not sure about this, though.

He was probably getting ready to bone that Emmy Rossum chick in the pictures around them. His pick-up line was, "Hey baby, wanna un-mask my phantom?" Either that, or she just saw him perform.
