I am listening to 'Exile on Main Street' by the Rolling Stones, but that is irrelevant.

Elliot, if you have not heard these bands already, you should listen to them. I think that people who like the Features generally would also like:

the Kinks
the Talking Heads
Elvis Costello & the Attractions
Pere Ubu
XTC
Roxy Music
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

you have to buy pearl jam concerts - that is ridiculous free trade of live shows is the only way to go and I guess that's another thing that's better about jam bands you don't buy live music it's free from the band to you it's there way of saying thanks - their not in it for the money

I would have to respectfully disagree with you here.  Jam bands, though many probably do love what they do, are most certainly in it for the money.  Do you think that Phish earned their millions, make that millions upon millions, by 'giving away their music as a gift to the fans'?  No, people have payed (increasingly big) bucks to see them live.  They make shitloads of money off of mechandise.  Evidently even shitloads are not enough, however, because now they are policing the lots for fan-made merchnadise, and even taking fans to court for selling t-shirts.  Is this 'not in it for the money'?  Granted, they do have a fan-friendly taping policy, but one of the biggest reasons that they do is because they learned from the Dead that it's massive free advertising.  And if they decide to release a live album, they most certainly do not give it away, they sell it just like Pearl Jam does.  I will agree with you that bands like Phish are more fan-oriented than most bands, but don't fool yourself by believing that it's any less a business than any other band.

Howdy, y'all.  I'm brand-spankin' new to this-here forum, but ah 'pree-shyate yeralls musical recommendations.  Here's what's been rollin' round my CD machine lately:

1.  A compilation of all the Features stuff I could find anywhere.  This has been in non-stop play mode at the Hautala household for a week.  No lie.  I keep expecting my wife to tell me to play something else, but then she starts humming 'Karie-Ann,' and we have to play it--again.  Does anybody know where I can find a 'legit' copy of the first EP?

2. 'Arthur,' by the Kinks.  I can't say enough good things about this record.  I first heard it about a year ago.  I have played it so many times since then that it is now permanently etched in my brain.  Even though I don't need to play it anymore, I still do.

3.  Sam and Dave, the Rhino 'Sweat and Soul' anthology.   Memphis soul is the mother tongue.  If this music doesn't make you shake yo' butt and shout out loud, you're probably dead.  In fact, you've probably been dead for a while.

4.  'Painted From Memory,' by Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach.  Not my all-time favorite record by EC, but it puts me into a certain sentimental mood.  New Elvis record comes out this spring!  Wooohooo!

5.  'Back Tuva Future,' by Kongar-Ol Ondar.  Tuvan throat singing!  Three notes at once!  Neat!  Weird!  I've been practicing this technique in the shower.  This has drawn protests from my wife (and my dogs, and my neighbors, and...)  Watch 'Genghis Blues,' OK?

Anyone watch the Volunteers last night?  While it was nice to see Kentucky win one, I really thought UT played better overall...

mr. davies is spot on about roxy music. their first five albums are great. i was expecting more out of the b-sides on the box set. 'the numberer' is cool only for eno's blip-blips. 'hula-kula's' sort of good. i switch between stranded and country life most of the time. the first album wears thin after a while. i guess anything does if you listen to hundreds of times.

mattfriction, I applaud the choice of Clarity, that is definitely Jimmy Eat World's best album. Static comes in a close second though. But dude, Very Emergency by the Promise Ring? Yuck. I love the Promise Ring, but I sold that CD back after about a month. It was weak. No depth to the songs. And nothing stood out. There are no great songs like 'Why Ever Did We Meet,' or 'Red Paint' on that album, only bland filler. I kept waiting for the peak of the album, then it just ended. All you need by them is Nothing Feels Good.

And Clem Snide was awesome at the Sutler Sunday night. Anybody who doesn't know them needs to check them out now.

I came to a realization this morning.  Contrary to what I've always thought I preferred, I actually like 'Doggystyle' by Snoop Doggy Dogg *better* than Dr. Dre's 'The Chronic.'  I guess it's just one of those rare occasions, like in the case of The Godfather, where the sequel is better than the original.  Dr. Dre as a producer (and somewhat as a rapper) is the shit.

as I recall, both eminem albums i've heard had spots of cool music and production. I even like the vocal style eminem uses, it's pretty original, sometimes annoying though. The main problem is definately the lyrical substance. Maybe i'm just not hard core enough to enjoy songs about driving the dead body of my child's mother to be dumped in the ocean while said daughter rides shotgun. He did write a pretty funny song about mushrooms.

I'll agree with with deevol - Eminem is hit or miss.  Dr. Dre only produced about half of both of those Eminem albums.  I think Eminem is a great rapper, even if he is a nut case.  I like it because it's not just an endless stream of gangsterbabble; most of his lyrics are really creative, really coherant, and really well-crafted, at least compared to most rap lyrics in the world today.

I also really like Dr. Dre's work with 2Pac (U Can't C Me, California Love), NWA (most of Straight Outta Compton), Warren G (Regulators), and I actually like what he did on that Eve & Gwen Stefani song.

my list has exapnded! i bought the elvis costello album brutal youth today, wanted it for a while. i've also been listening to dashboard confesisonal a lot lately. and the features...like its jesus...

all this talk about eminem... I'll say, i don't really like his vocal style, but its there. there is an occassional good beat or other music source behind his mysoginistic disgusting hate speech, but somehow, the hate speech overrides whatever talent he might have had.
He disgusts me; try to shut the lyrics out and listen to the beat or the querky samples and loops, he is a dirty hateful person and it saddens me that he is spreading such derogetory messages to the poor people who are musically inept enough to actually listen to his records and give him money.

wow, i never expected eminem to be the topic of discussion on this message board. i applaud you.
i know that a lot of people don't like rap at all, but eminem is pretty much undeniably good at what he does. say you're offended, say you're disgusted... but i don't think that anyone could say 'eminem isn't a good rapper.' and also, am i the only person who isn't *ever* offended by song lyrics? in fact, i'm really only 'offended' in general when something directly deals with me. movies, music, comedy... none of it bothers me. am i pushing the women's movement back a few decades?
ramble, ramble... the point of this post was to recommend mc paul barman to anyone who likes eminem. you will either love him or hate him, but it's definitely worth a listen. try 'mtv get off the air part 2' or 'the joy of your world.'

my list has exapnded!  i bought the elvis costello album brutal youth today, wanted it for a while.  i've also been listening to dashboard confesisonal a lot lately.
'brutal youth' sucks ass and dashboard confessional sucks even more. elvis costello only has 2 1/2 worthwhile albums.

i'm not a big princess superstar fan. i sort of like 'bad babysitter' and the song with kool keith, but i think she's pretty mediocre in general. i can't really think of a white girl rapper that i like, actually. give me rah digga or foxy brown over those bitches anyday.

i'm not sure how i feel about putting *white* and *rap* together. why is hip hop all the talk these days?

as for the whole offended topic, i think that anytime rappers/comedians/musicans put down my people within the context of their artform, they negate the movement and my cultural experience as a whole. seriously, i think being offended by lyrics and whatnot is bullshit. women should just accept that they ain't nothing but bitches and hoes.

bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks. when i was around 7 or 8, i used to carry a boombox on my shoulders and walk along the road by me and my grandmothers apartment. this is in southern indiana where there's not a minority to be found for a 100 mile radius. i'm sure i looked like a jackass, but at the time i thought i was really cool. when i look at people that have a homeboy crisis now, i sort of want to have sympathy. but then i realize that i was 8 years old and most of them are 17-24. they have the same dilemma though. they think they look really cool, but they're just jesters for my amusement....even though a lot of them have guns.

'this years model', 'armed forces', 1/4 of 'my aim is true', and 1/4 of 'get happy!'.

what about 'trust' or 'imperial bedroom' or 'painted by memory' ? those are all excellent albums. i will agree however that only 1/4 of 'get happy' is worthwhile.

i've skimmed those albums and i wasn't keen on them. i rarely like everything a band/artist records. take wire for instance. 'pink flag' and 'chairs missing' are brilliant.
'154' is mostly great. anything after that sucks. mission of burma's one of the few bands i've never heard anything bad from, but they only existed from 79-83. every band seems to have a finite amount of good music in them. it usually only takes a few albums for them to go stale(i realize there are exceptions). very few have the decency to break up.

'chairs missing' is brilliant. what about a band like joy division? they only put out two full length albums and they're both fucking amazing.

joy division only existed for a few years. new order has certainly recorded their share of junk.

yes, new order did put out some shit. however, 'power, corruption, and lies' is very good, as well as 'movement'. i really cannot think of a single band whose entire output is consistently breathtaking and exciting. the velvet underground, perhaps. possibly, captain beefheart.

like i said before, mission of burma had a very consistent output. i realize they only have an ep and an lp, but even the stuff i've heard off of the taang! albums is good. i pretty much ignore any post 1970 kinks album, which makes them one of the most consistent bands ever. i guess i have tunnel vision with a lot of things. jolly rancher makes consistently good candies. i'm actually enjoying a bag of jolly rancher gummies as i write this. everyone who likes gummy snacks should try these if they get a chance. don't confuse them with jolly jellies(also superb). for the record, dark chocolate is better than milk chocolate, macadamia nuts are the kings of all nuts, black licorice is better than that red imposter, and breyers is the best ice cream. ben & jerry's and haagen daz are good but not as good. i heard matt pelham is going to start making ice cream and selling it at big local events....seriously......guy.

yeah that makes sense, i could see matt running a booth at uncle dave macon days. perhaps he could put his daughters to work in a few years. hey i'd buy some.

Do Chewy Runts count as a gummy candy? For a pure sugar rush, those things are hard to beat!

i wouldn't call them a gummy candy. they'd go into the chewy delicious confection category. other's include chewy spree, chewy gobstoppers, giant chewy sweet-tarts,etc. i'd lump caramels, storck reisen, and taffy in the chewy delicious chewy category. i love candy!!!

OOOOOHHHH  I hate it when you kids start knockin' the Stone Roses! Hey whatabout that lame-ass John Squire solo effirt the sea horses. They even had a stupid name. The stupid part is that Squire tried to live out this weird Zepplin fantasy starting with the second Roses album and ending abruptly with that Seahorse nonsense. You can have the second LP but you can never take the first one and all of its assorted singles away! I won't let you!

definitely, don't take away the first one! second coming is ok, but a lot of it is pointless. I do like Ten Storey Love Song though...
