Holy Crap, that's good news! I was going to start a topic at some point today about how amazing Ben Gibbard is...

Okay, for those who care, the date is April 11th at the Slow Bar. I will be there.

oh man, could you upload it to the mp3 site? at least the newer songs?

i'm not really feeling pig lib yet. i like that it's less poppy and more weird than the last few pavement albums and the first solo record, but i think that it's a style that a reunited pavement could pull off much better than the jicks.

man my english sucks.

Fuck yeah dude, Mingus is my Christ-figure. Monk is also the shit. I bought this great book that breaks apart the work of a bunch of Free Jazz guys with music theory and I'm on the Mingus chapter right now. It's totally fucking great. Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is definitely my favorite rec by him.

My list (I'll try to be brief)--
John Coltrane-"Love Supreme","Major Works of..."
Ennio Morricone-"Slalom","Psycho Morricone","Giornata Nera Per L'ariete"
The Notwist-"Neon Golden"
Mum-"Finally We are No One"
Jim O'Rourke-"Eureka","Halfway to a Threeway","Insignificance"
Roxy Music- self-titled
Bryan Eno-"Before and After Science","TAking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)"
Magazine-"Real Life"
Yo La Tengo-(the new record, not out yet, don't know what it's called) "The Sounds of the Sounds of Science"
Mouse on Mars-"Iaora Tahiti"
Kinks-"Something Else By..."
Stereolab & Brigitte Fontaine-"Calimero" (cd single)
Stereolab-"Dots and Loops"(always goddamnit), "Refried Ectoplasm: Switched On Volume 2"
Patti Page-"Golden Hits"
Olivier Messiaen-"Turangalila Symphonie"
Baby Jane's in Acapulco, we're all flying down to Riooooooooooooo

I've been curious about the new release. I've been a fan for 5 years and I still haven't bought the CD. I wasn't sure how good it was, but this might make me steer towards purchasing it soon. Anything that is more "World of Noise" than "Learning How To Smile" is good in my book.

I did buy the Apples in stereo "Let Go" EP today at Hastings for $5. Good purchase.

Well, I've been listening to a jewel that I recently stumbled across, and I mean I did stumble across it. I bought an old folk record at a Goodwill for about thirty cents a couple of months ago because the cover was extremely cute, and it was thirty cents. So, I had yet to listen to it until last weekend. I thought "hey, I'll throw that folk record in", knowing that it would suck. So, I open the sleeve and it has two records in it...one of which has a blank white label. I'm a little scared, wondering what I may hear on this mystery record. I put it in to hear the voice of a certain John Lennon and a certain beautiful man by the name...McCartney? Then a guitar kicks in, and it is none other than "Get Back"...yes, apparently I have stumbled upon none other than a Get Back Sessions bootleg. One word...FATE.

also: The Features - various bootlegs and mix CDs
The Strokes - "Someday" single and various live performances
Love - Forever Changes
The Beatles - Anthology 2

also...I've been the ultimate geek the past few days by listening to "If I Had a Hammer" by Peter, Paul, and Mary. Don't ask me why, but I've had an uncontrollable craving for this song lately.

I guess I'm not anti-NPR. It is better than 107.5 THE RIVER or 102.9 THE BUZZ and all of the other retarded radio stations we have around here. When I'm in my car, 98% of the time I listen to a CD, 1% of the time I listen to 88.3 and the other 1% of the time is spent listening to 101.1 The Beat. ph34r.gif

Were they recently in Nashville? Because I heard Nickel Creek on the show & Garrison referred to them as hometown heroes or something like that. I was underwhelmed by Nickel Creek's performance because I've heard a lot of hype about them but had never heard them and then they were boring.
I always want to like Prarie Home Companion but usually it bores me.

I listen to Fresh Air a lot because Terry Gross gets good guests. And one I discovered lately is the Todd Mundt show. I loooove this American Life, but I only catch it like once every 3 months. I also usually like TOTN Science Fridays, for the geek in me.

I was convinced to give Neko Case a chance today after hearing her on Morning Edition. NPR is definitely a life-enhancing experience

Car Talk is a favorite of mine too.

Caller: I have a question. My car blew up and killed my wife and two year-old daughter...

Host 1: >insane laughter< I bet that had to hurt the old wallet!
Host 2: >more hysterical laughter< That's one way to get back at your mother-in-law! >more laughter<

Caller: Yeah, but I was wondering if for insurance purposes if it's possible that the car

Host 1: >more laughter< I bet you'll have to have one heck of a policy to replace your wife.
Host 2: >holding back laughter< I bet that'd be a high premium on it, too...

It was defintely worth the $10.99 + tax I paid at Tower on West End. It's extremely wide-eyed and refreshing. Very infectious dance beats, almost entirely electronic. It kinda trails off at the end. Worth it for the first few songs alone though. Plus, Ben finally gets some female backing vocals as opposed to his own wussy (not necessarily a bad thing) BGVs.

Yeah, RD, the Death and Dismemberment tour was rad. Cex was figgin hilarious. I was also lucky enough to catch DCFC before that when I was at a conference in San Diego in late 2001. It was one of the few times that I thoroughly enjoyed a show without any beforehand knowledge of the band's music.

I'm glad to hear the postitive reviews smile.gif

Cex was extremely funny. Any rapper that incorporates Jim Varney is okay with me. The Dimemberment Plan's cover of "Back that Ass Up" was also very memorable.

I've only seen DCFC once and I would LOVE it if they come back around. I know that they have been playing a few shows in the Northwest, but nothing anywhere near here unfortunately sad.gif

Wow, when I wrote that, I thought I would either get no response or "you're such a dork."

I must admit I love and learn from NPR. It gets a lot of play on my to/from work commute. Their broadcasts often bring me to tears, even. Like on the day of Fred Rogers' death when they did an especially touching report or like today, when I listened to a report on a certain ghetto writer nick-named "Black."

High quality stuff. Maybe I should support them in their e-pledge campaign.

Hmmm. On second thought, that idea is even better.

Time spent playing with your fiance and kitty: priceless

Tom Foolery wheels and deals.  Talk to him.
What good would that do?
He previously offered a b&p for the Exit/In show, which would have the new songs.
Sir, I'm afraid that you've confused me with blightman. Much like you, I prefer to keep my collection private.
Sorry about the mistake in identity. DO NOT ask Tom Foolery for bootlegs. Ok, I think that fixes it.

I found this on the 3rd page of the previous Exit/In show. This is what I was referencing earlier...

for anyone intersted in a copy of the show, send a b&p to:
art vandalay
2179 south berrys chapel road
franklin, tennessee 37069

the kind gentleman who records (under the codename of art) wiil get you a copy, and i can report that if you wish to butter him up, he enjoys candy that is tart and of the tiny persuasion.

It was FreezeTag that posted that one.

Were they recently in Nashville? Because I heard Nickel Creek on the show & Garrison referred to them as hometown heroes or something like that.
garrison keilor was in nashville a couple weeks ago; on a somewhat related note: a few weeks ago at the mission of burma show in atlanta, i told neuboy, exliontamer & ray davies that roger miller (guitarist/vocalist of MOB) looked like garrison keilor, and none of them knew who i was talking about.

Someone mentioned Terry Gross having good guests. She had Ahmir Thompson/?uestlove of The Roots on the other day. I thought that it was funny that somebody was talking hip-hop with Terry Gross. I wondered if she understood anything of what he was talking about. I also learned in that interview that DJ Shadow had ?uestlove beat on the number of vinyls he owned..DJ Shadow has over 60,000. "Daaaaayyyemmn."

On a completely unrelated note, I was reading an article on msnbc.com about the Elizabeth Smart thing, and they had a picture of some guy who unwittingly put her and her kidnappers up for the nite in his room... he had a really nice (huge) Joy Division poster for "whisper." I had never seen that one before.
Why would you do that?

yes please do upload them
I just uploaded mp3s of Exhibit A, There's a Million Ways..., and That's the Way It's Meant to Be. Many thanks to Art for his quality product.

Either Terry or her interns must be interested in music- it's the only show where I've heard the Shins used as background music, and their other choices are equally appealing and often new to me. So maybe she did follow the hiphop conversation ok.

flaming lips - transmissions from the satelite heart
I just bought this album and it didn't do anything for me until I listened to it again. It hasn't totally floored me like Yoshimi and The Soft Bulletin did, but it's growing.

NPR- I do love listening to A Prairie Home Companion (thank you Damon), but I really can't take the biased reporting. What bugs me is when a news organization feigns objectivity and doesn't admit to mixing in some of their opinions and slants with the straight facts. No reporter or talk show host can be totally objective.
That's why I listen to 1510. Blatantly biased! Plus I happen to agree a lot of the time.

I'm listening to Pig Lib for the second time and I must say that while SM + Jicks don't necessarily have anything dramatically new to offer, the CD is great! Malkmus' lyrical soothness rivals even that of Beck's.

My CD came with a free 5-song EP that in my opinion is just as good as (if not better than) the LP. If you plan on getting this, do so soon and keep your eye out for the "limited edition".

I'm listening to Pig Lib for the second time and I must say that while SM + Jicks don't necessarily have anything dramatically new to offer, the CD is great! Malkmus' lyrical soothness rivals even that of Beck's.
the cd also shows that malkmus is one hell of a guitar player...(in his own slightly warped way)

i love "pig lib". much more laid back than his solo debut.......

lately i've been listening to:

"another day, another dollar" ep (vinyl)- gang of four
"we're the banana splits" (vinyl)- the banana splits
"the modern lovers"- the modern lovers
"lola, percy, and arthur come face to face with the village green preservation society.....something else!" (vinyl)- the kinks (an imported two lp compilation of selections from those 6 albums......it works really great as a kinks mix)
"chairs missing"- wire

I've been listening to

Third Eye Foundation (the best drum-n-bass ever created)

For those of you who have never had the opportunity to listen to TEF, I highly recommend his album "You Guys Kill Me." It will give you much happiness and good experiences (I'm practicing to be a fortune cook author).

The Royal Tenenbaums Soundtrack

Massive Attack's Protection

Wire

Orb - orblivion

What I dig at the moment music wise:
- The Live Kinks... on vinyl
- Beggars Banquet (The Stones)... also on vinyl
- The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, and The Spiders From Mars (Bowie)
- And when riding with Mr. Dawson I hear ALOT of Joy Division

I've been listening to alot of vinyl records lately because all of my cd's were stolen out of my car. Only a week later, yet another damn dirty thief stole the stereo out of it.

good for you. get used to the people close to you making fun of you. which album(s) are you listening to? "very" is the only one i've heard that seems consistent.
