TOPIC: what is everyone listening to?
Posted  Monday, July 21, 2003 at 10:59 AM
Post 1 of 349
Currently:

Pylon: Gyrate (vinyl)
Brian Eno and David Byrne: My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (vinyl)
David Bowie: Stage (vinyl)
Lilliput: Kleenex/Lilliput (cd)
Of Montreal: Singles and Songles (cd)

also I just found out that Rhino Records will be reissuing the first two Television albums with bonus tracks in the fall. They will also be issuing a much bootlegged live show 'Live At The Old Waldorf' for the first time on cd.......now only if they could issue a rarities compillation that includes all of demos that they did with Eno producing while Richard Hell was in the band......

Oasis "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants"
The Strokes "Is This It"
Oldies 96.3

Not only have I not been driving much lately, I have very few CDs in my car. My at home time has been devoured with working on my film projects...(HaveSomeSoma can knowingly laugh at these projects).

JOSHING? I take offense to that phrase. Do you even know where that originated? You deliberately replaced the word JOKING with JOSHING, as if the two had the same meaning. What, do you think all people with the name Josh are jokes? You ignorate redneck. Some of my best friends are Josh's not to mention the fact that my great-great-grandmother married a Josh; it's uninformed people like you who gyp them out of the freedoms countless Josh's died for. One of those freedoms being an understanding, tolerant country void of labels and hatred.

I would highly recomend that you bypass the newer stuff (Kid A, Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief) at least for now, and buy either The Bends or OK Computer. But good luck finding either of those in a used CD store.

I'll second that. Unfortunately, I don't think it's that hard to find The Bends used. It had enough top 40 hits to warrant the masses to buy it for the one song, get sick of it, and toss the whole disc without giving the rest of the album a chance. People who do that should all die.

I've been in a musical slump this summer. I haven't found that one favorite CD or band to last me for a long time that isn't an old stand-by. You've got to have new and fresh exciting things along with your old stand-bys, you know. Last summer it was live Features botlegs. For this June, it was "Summerteeth" by Wilco. That is a really good album, but it hasn't lasted in my regular rotation like I hoped it would. I was excited about the new Clem Snide album coming out, then got dissapointed. I even have a radio show this summer, and you'd think being exposed to 2 hours of new music every week would do it, but it hasn't. Oh well, I did just get the beatles anthology 2, so that will give me alot to listen to and re-listen to for a while.

Slump.

fear not, for epitonic has not slipped my mind. i think i got most of the stuff off of there that i wanted for the time being. sadly, though, my hard drive decided to fuck up and later needed replacing, so much of what was once stored on it is now lost. sad.gif i'm in the process of remaking the vast empire of mp3s that you once made.

Not that much. That's why it's on the play list- I got it a long time ago & was never interested in it enough to get to know it. So, I'm revisiting it now. It lacks something that was essential to my love for the Makeup, although I can't put my finger on it...

My favorite Royal Trux album is Accelerator. It's probably their catchiest record. Veterans of Disorder, Pound for Pound, and Thank You are also good, but I'm not sure exactly how I would rank them. Some of their earlier albums border on free noise, so I wouldn’t recommend starting with them. Hope this helps!

my favourite is twin infinitives. since it's my favourite it's obviously the best.

next is singles, live, unreleased. then accelerator and thank you.

Man, I love this guy John Cunningham & his records Homeless House & Happy-Go-Unlucky. I knew nothing about him prior to hearing them last week, but I guess he works w/ Fugu & maybe others. He writes really pretty, melodic, poppy songs, with lots of worthy comparisons to Nick Drake, late-60s Beach Boys & Beatles, & Emitt Rhodes.

Yeah, I was mostly re-inspired to listen to it because I'll be seeing him open for Radiohead on Sunday in St. Louis. Unfortunately, I've been having a hard time finding the first SM album (that I used to have a copy of but lost) for less that $17.

I completely blew it not seeing him at 328 a few years back.

Well I never got around to playing it the other night. I'm pretty sure that since the game is meant to be played by children that there is no killing involved. But we could arrange a grudge match before the next Features show and make up our own rules. ph34r.gif

Surfer Girl and Shut Down Vol 2 by the Beach Boys... The best of the Surf-era double album CD sets. "Surfer Girl," "In My Room," "Dont Worry Baby," "Catch A Wave," "Fun Fun Fun." Absolutely Brilliant. Somebody sold almost their entire Beach Boys CD collection to the record store here and I have been taking advantage of the cheap CDs. They are the 1990 pressings, too, so they don't have Mike Love credited as songwriter on as many songs.

Man, I don't mean to sound highbrow, but I've been listening to pretty much all classical music lately, specifically Chopin's Piano Concertos, Tchaikovsky's 'Pathetique,' Berlioz' 'Symphonie Fantastique,' and a lot of Beethoven. Classical music is good for me right now.

In the car, I've been listening to the Jetpack album and the Feable Weiner album, both of which are great.

And I'm counting down the days until that new OutKast album comes out.

Your listing of the Vue prompted me to dig through my cds and listen to a bootleg that I made of them in November of 2001, when they played the Exit/In with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Their cover of the Velvet Underground's "Can't Stand It" still rules me.

oh you mean joy division? interpol couldn't write a good song if it was stuck in carlos' hair care products. "turn on the bright lights" is good, but it gets boring after you hear that same "disorder" bassline over and over again.

actually,

if you thought about it or actually listened to good music instead of reading a comparison out of your rollingstone subscription

you'd know that they sound much more like magnetic fields than joy division.

i can see how you would be bitter about interpol though. they're all hot and julian casablanca is chub. and that one guy is dating drew barrymore, so indie rock and adorable!!! awww

Hahahaha

I do like Interpol (except for that god damn NYC song), because I like listening to their music during the cold weather. The guitar is the most obvious reason they don't sound exactly like Joy Division, as well as song topics. I would probably like them even more if they sounded like JD.

i still enjoy interpol, but am not as obsessed with the album as I once was before. it just gets old after a while. i do, however, enjoy the way that pitchforkmedia.com has been constantly bashing interpol for avoiding the studio and playing the same 2 new songs for over a year. they once said that if pitchfork put together a christmas album that interpol's contribution would be "christmas will tear us apart". very funny.

I recently bought Neil Young's Greendale album, not Neil's best work considering its a play/musical sort of thing, but comes with a cool live performance DVD too.

I totally agree. I've seen Beulah twice and really liked both shows, over a year ago. The Coast Is Never Clear took a while to grow on me, but I really enjoyed it after a couple of listens. I was quite addicted to it for months. Gradually, I grew out of liking them as much as I had, because I found stuff that I liked a lot better.

For a year or two, as my friends at the time can confirm, I was Oasis' biggest fan. I bought everything - albums, singles, bootlegs, videos, books. Hell, I even bought an Epiphone Sheraton because of Noel Gallagher. However, their act began to get stale to me on Be Here Now, and by Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, I had completely lost interest.

I don't have anything nice to say about the current state of Oasis, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for their first 2 (maybe 3) albums. They were really on top of their game, and I think they made some really timeless rock records. I still contend, though, that the best Oasis songs are B-sides (and not necissarily the ones on The Masterplan.)

I have to say that I haven't listened to "Heathen Chemistry" in months (and I mean upwards of 6 or so, probably), but I still think it's okay. Oasis will always be my favorite band and I'll always think they're amazing and they will probably be the only band that I'll spend mega bucks on. SOTSOG is my 2nd favorite Oasis album after MG, so I'm still loyal to Oasis 2.0.

And really, I can't think of any other band who devotes/devoted as much time to quality B-Sides as Oasis. The Masterplan rules all...

As of right now, though, I'm listening to ROOM ON FIRE by the Strokes. It is simply amazing and after seeing them live, they have entered into my top 3 favorite bands. The Strokes are so good...they are so good...

I'm also listening to "Chutes Too Narrow," especially Saint Simon and Fighting in a Sack. Good...

Thanks, Keith. This is so lame! Has the name Cease-and-Desist been taken? They should go with something like that. Sounds like a good name for an electronic group.

"It just goes to illustrate the misplaced priorities of this administration. I mean, if the federal government sends any band a cease-and-desist letter this year, it should be Staind!"

Actually, the Luxury Liners are playing at 12th and Porter, but I may be able to swing both. Denny Diamond is outstanding!

So, with Kindercore going under, is the IATWTC show still happening? I assume it is.

BrianW recently introduced me to Pinback. Very cool stuff. If you're not familiar with them, I might describe them as what Death Cab for Cutie would have sounded like if they started as a math rock band. Does that make any sense? Thanks, Brian.

I finally bought the Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Fever to Tell". There's actually an unexpected amount of variety for a screaming chick backed by a single guitar (played through two amps?) and drums. I laugh at all the people who buy the album expecting to hear 11 tracks that sound like "Maps" (which is a beautiful song, by the way).

I also picked up the new Air CD. I've been meaning to get into these guys for awhile, but Keith suggested I get Moon Safari first. I bought "Talkie Walkie", though, because I'm a sucker for "free" DVDs. (I also bought it on EnemyRoses' recommendation) It's good stuff. More female "vocals" than I expected, but all-around it's a nice mood album. This is probably the CD I'd listen to if I had a girl to make out with.

I've been listening to a great deal of Jimmy Eat World lately. This is a highly underrated band if you ask me.

walkmen-bows and arrows
i think i'm doomed not to have this album. everytime i go to cat's (the only place in m'boro that i can find that's even selling it) they've "just sold out." i walked in the door today and the lady greeted me with "sorry!" damn! but hopefully tomorrow i will have it at last. she wrote down my name and number and said she'd save me one.

so, meanwhile, i've been listening to:

the von bondies-"lack of communication" and "raw and rare"
the dirtbombs-"ultraglide in black"
fair verona (i dusted this one off and can't stop listening to it lately. it's so weird because, aside from forget cassettes, i would normally just completely not like a band that sounded like this at all. i can't put my finger on what it is, but i sure have been wearing it out. thanks again carl.)

You're welcome. I need to break that out again, too.

yes, i did. it's on march 4 (the night after the von bondies show) and i'm very excited. their past two shows in nashville have been at the slow bar, so i have missed out. i expect their live show to be entertaining, to say the least.

I agree. I just have that one album with "The Middle" on it, but I have absolutely worn it out. What a great album.

I've been buying a lot of new cds lately. I got Pinkerton for the first time today, I can't believe this thing is almost 10 years old and I haven't heard it. Anyway...

Weezer, Pinkerton
Damien Rice, O. I bought this on a whim because I liked the cover art (I'm a sucker for cardboard fold-outs rather than jewel cases) and it turned out to be really good. I dunno anything about this guy. Anyone?
Neutral Milk Hotel, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
The Strokes, Room on Fire
The Stills, Logic Will Break Your Heart
Interpol, Turn On the Bright Lights
Franz Ferdinand, Darts of Pleasure EP (and various downloads) I heard about these guys on the BBC6 show while waiting for The Features' broadcast and I bought their EP tonight. It's really good stuff, kinda disco-alternative-rock. I dunno how old or new they are, does anyone know anything about them?

Some of this stuff was "hot" a year or two ago, but I usually don't discover bands until a year or two after they come out because I hate listening to the radio/watching mtv.

Off topic, but where might I find a copy of The Features EP? I still don't have it. I tried eBay, and I googled it, thumbing through several out-of-print cd vendors but didn't find anything.

Also listening to:

The Shins: Oh, Inverted World, which I bought after buying Chutes Too Narrow after it got several nods on here a few months back. I really like this band. Wish they'd play here soon.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch Soundtrack. Such fun.

i e-mailed the guy who was selling the features ep for like $6, but turns out he doesn't actually have it in stock. i don't know why he even has it listed. and by his attitude in his reply to my e-mail, i get the feeling he would've just kept my money and not sent me anything if i had not e-mailed him before purchase. i got my copy for $15. kind of steep, but i'm just thankful to have a sealed copy in my possession.

I recently bought the Features EP sealed at Digital Planet for about $6. It was a steal!

I am on a CD buying binge like BOF. The ones that I have listened to the most are:

NMH- On Avery Island (it's a crime that I just now bought this CD)
Glossary- How we handle out midnights
Neko Case- Blacklisted
REM - Animal single (the cover is worth every penny)
The Mattoid

I feel HSS pain. The Walkmen CD is not meant to be in M'boro. I even went to Tower and the were sold out too. Does anyone have the split with Calla? Is it worth $14?

I don't actually have the album myself, but every time I hear somebody play The Walkmen's "The Rat", it gets stuck in my head for days. That's what's in my head right now since I heard it this morning.

Well, gee, of course I will add on to that one. Half a World Away is a great song as is Near Wild Heaven and Texarkana on Out of Time. I have been listening to Monster. Man, that is a fucking great album and I always see it in the used cd's at McKay's for el cheapo and it pisses me off because so many people have returned it or sold it. I am hunting for a single by R.E.M. and am not having any luck. It is the Bad Day single (pt. 2) and it has a song called Out in the Country by Mills that is absolutely wonderful. If anyone sees it, please let me know by message board or PM me. Thank you!

i was looking at the upcoming releases list on insound.com today & it said astralwerks is putting out "here come the warm jets," "before and after science," "another green world," and "taking tiger mountain" on 5/18. i looked on astralwerks' website but couldn't find any additional information (though i'm assuming they're remastered...i'm wondering about bonus tracks?) anyway, this is fantastic news, as my copy of "another green world" split in half in january. exliontamer wanted to hold out buying a new one in hopes that they'd put out remasters...looks like he's getting his wish. "another green world" is one of my top 10 albums of all time.

yeah, i was very excited when i found out about this....i read on an eno fansite that the only real bonus track may be the addition of "seven deadly finns" to the reissue of "here come the warm jets". however, the mastering should be excellent.

here's an old story from nme.com

BRIAN ENO is to reissue four of his classic albums.

In an attempt to re-introduce albums by Eno, Virgin Records will, over the next couple of years, be releasing his music in batches of four or five at a time.

As a result, the Roxy Music founder will reissue four of his early solo albums first - ‘Here Come The Warm Jets’, ‘Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)’, ‘Another Green World’ and ‘Before & After Science’.

The records, which will be packaged in digipak form, will be re-released on May 17.

- northstar "pollyanna" (one of the best albums released so far this year)
- ben kweller "on my way" (i've been a BK fan for almost 3 years and this
album is taking awhile to grow on me...but it'll get there eventually...)
- modest mouse "good news.."
- pretty girls make graves "the new romance"
- laws rushing e.p.

- ben gibbard/andrew kenny split e.p.
- metric "old world underground..."

and i will gladly admit that i've been checking the party and the river regularly to hear "don't tell me" by avril lavigne. (here's the part where katie gets embarrassed and tries to tell everyone she's not my sister) wink.gif

Absolution is their first album though that i have no problem listening to all the way through and then listening to it over again. This is probably because its their most varied record. Orgins of Symmetry was just a little much for instant repeat listenings.

While driving to East Tennessee, I had a truly wacky idea. Would anyone be interested in starting The Features Message Board Album Club? It would work similar to a book club. Each week, we would select an album. Everyone who chooses to participate would buy/borrow/steal the album and listen to it a few times during the week. Then we could all discuss it on here.

This would be a great way to discover new music, learn more about music in general, and learn about your fellow Features fans (by having a better understanding of their likes and dislikes).

Any takers?

Well, I think it's good. A couple of songs are great. Specifically, "The Tide That Left and Never Came Back" is one of the best songs I've heard all year. They are very Longpigs-ish, aren't they?

It does feel good to listen to some new Britpop, though. You know, for quite a long spell that was ALL I was buying/listening to. But now, it seems like I only happen upon this kind of music every once in a while. Is that because not many bands are making music like this anymore, or is it just because I don't see you on a regular basis anymore?

Speaking of Britpop, has anyone seen this? I saw it at Blockbuster tonight and I want to rent it.

And to those of you listening to Wilco's new album, how is it?
It's not as bad as I was expecting it to be. I'd heard lots of just horrible things about it - that it was all really slow and boring. But as it turns out, there's actually alot of variety, and there are some really great songs.

My description of it is this: it sounds like John Lennon and Neil Young made an album together and got Ryan Norris to produce it.

i love it, but then, i do love jeff tweedy...it's just different, once again. it kind of sounds like that loosefur stuff that jeff and jim o'rourke did last year. if you haven't heard it, you can listen to the entirety on wilcoworld.net.

Yes. It was at the Blockbuster on White Bridge Road, in the New Releases.

Live Forever didn't get the best reviews. From what I can gather, it's mainly Noel Gallagher saying what a wanker Damon is. And not nearly enough Jarvis. I wanted to see it the week of release, and I couldn't find even one cinema showing it! Still, I'm sure it's worth it if you're a bit of an anglophile. I really should get around to watching my boyfriend's copy.

I did not like Live Forever. It really is Oasis v. Blur, and like the Ladytron said, not enough Jarvis for my taste. It's all about how they hated Maggie Thatcher and started playing rock and roll....but who's better, the working-class Oasis or the middle-class Blur? I hate to spoil the ending, but Robbie Williams kills them all.

They also have it at the Blockbuster on West End by Vandy.

Any takers?
great idea. I'm in.
Bill, it was a different time. It was back when we didn't know the Russians were incompetent.
