Play-In Games
« Reply #1 on: March 13, 2010, 02:00:42 AM »
For the previous tournament in 2006, a 65th song was added by having a single play-in game for the 16th seed of one region (just like the NCAA basketball tournament).

Since then, The Features have added many new songs to their repertoire. To make room for all of the new songs, the Selection Committee decided to expand the tournament again. All four regions now have play-in games for their 15th and 16th seeds.

This year, the play-in round will be March 14-16. The following songs will be vying for a spot in the tournament:

Some Kind of Region (Nashville, TN)
   Competing for the 15th Seed:
        Wooden Heart
        Golden Comb

   Competing for the 16th Seed:
Big Momma's Gonna Whip Us Good
        Concrete

Spongebath Region (Murfreesboro, TN)
   Competing for the 15th Seed:
         Engine Debris
         Jurley

   Competing for the 16th Seed:
         Button My Shirt
         That's Me

Universal Region (Santa Monica, CA)
   Competing for the 15th Seed:
         Two by Two
         Bumble Bee

   Competing for the 16th Seed:
         Take You On
         Guillotine

Old Favorite Region (Sparta, TN)
   Competing for the 15th Seed:
         Bring on the Night
         Stagecoach

   Competing for the 16th Seed:
         Stark White Stork Approaching
         Golden

it always blows my mind to see their songs listed out like this...realizing that they don't have any bad songs (and there's really only a handful that i'm "not crazy about"). it's unreal.

I believe that this was the brainchild of JamieCarroll. I am glad to see that someone is carrying out the tradition.

For fans of tournament thingys, JamieCarroll (aka BP) and myself (aka ulikabbq) are hosting a Nashville Burger tourney. You can find it on the ulika food blog.

Oh man! I didn't even notice, but you're right. This is a top 5 Features song for me, if not #1.

I guess it is kind of a rarity, though.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

As co-chair of the selection committee, I'll say that "Late Night was just forgotten. It just completely slipped off the radar. Same for Christmas Wish Book now that I think of it. Next year...

As for "Harold," the people who love it really love it, but it was never committed to recording that we know of, and, more importantly, it had always had a low number of votes in past tournaments, which was why it was not brought back.

I'm interested to see how the voting has changed a little bit as this pans out. Old fans have changed their perspectives some and we have a good number of new voters this time, so it's interesting to see that "Blow It Out" and "LIAB" aren't fairing so well as the classics they felt like a while ago. The tournament overall is considerably tougher this year since all the fluff is gone, and we're looking at all of the more favorite songs.

I also disagree that the Old Favorite category will produce the winner. I think at this point that it's anybody's game, and even picking the final four at this point isn't going to be easy since we're looking at a different set of voters this time.

Looks like the number of voters is falling off a bit. We had 15 in the play-in round but have dropped down to 7. Hopefully it'll pick back up in the latter rounds.

The Some Kind of Region is becoming the region of blow-outs. "The Drawing Board" crushed "Commotion." I never imagined that it would be one of the more popular songs from that record and thought it was a bit of a reach to make it a #1 seed. Looks like I was wrong. I'm still pulling for "Lions."

I'm glad to see "Hold You Alone" is still alive in the Old Favorite region. I love that song, but I'm not sure how popular it is with the fans.

"Your Smile" could be this year's Cinderella. I don't remember it doing very well in the previous tournaments. Maybe after all this time, we're starting to appreciate it more. Or maybe we're all just paying tribute to Eno.

"Circus" vs. "Exorcising Demons" is such a huge match-up. I'll be very interested to see which one wins. I think "The Idea of Growing Old" is also doing better than it usually does. I think it was really popular when they first started playing it in '02, but the fans seemed to drift away from it. Maybe we're all getting sentimental in our old age.

Three of the five previous champions have already been eliminated: "Buffalo Head", "Harder to Ignore", and "Mosis Tosis." No song has ever won the whole thing more than once. Can "Circus" or "Dark Room" pull it off this year?
