Blu Ray
« on: April 11, 2009, 07:42:17 AM »
Anyone else down with Blu-Rays?  I am, especially since the prices are slowly coming down.  My only complaint is that I wish they would include a DVD copy with every movie.  That's what HD-DVDs did, and I thought that was a great idea.
Either way, I think the quality of most blu rays is amazing, especially the audio.  Really, the audio makes DVDs sound like an 8-track tape.  The best looking transfer I've seen is probably the Criterion Bottle Rocket, the worst is definitely Christmas Vacation or Home Alone.

Wal Mart has House of 1000 Corpses and Robocop on sale for $10 each right now!

Speed Racer on Blu Ray is mind-boggling.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

What's the deal with some Blu-Rays coming with DVD copies as well? They hoping you give the DVD copy to a friend? Or is there a need to have multiple copies of a movie?

For me, it's because you only have one Blu-Ray player; you've already watched the Blu-Ray in HD, and you'd like to watch the movie again in a room with your kittens where you only have a DVD player.  And I know I was wishing my Wall-E Blu-Ray came with a DVD copy so I could take it to my parents' house and make them watch it, but it didn't.  I'm sure for most people it's so their bratty children can watch the movie in their spiffy dropdown DVD player installed in their SUV.

To my knowledge, I've never seen anything on Blu-Ray.  Is it really that much better than DVD?  I've always assumed it was just some sort of marketing ploy to make more money for the studios and have been planning to skip that whole generation of media.  Should I reconsider?

I'm around HD day in and day out. I look at stuff on monitors that cost more than luxury SUV's. What do I think? I think Blu-Ray is good if there is a difference between the extras on the BR vs the DVD. I have a PS3 at home that upscales regular, standard def, widescreen DVDs amazingly. And believe me, I'm a snob when it comes to HD/SD.  I don't spend the extra cash on Blu-Ray unless the BR has significant bonus material that I want to see. I bought The Dark Knight on BR for this reason, but if the DVD and BR are the same content wise and the DVD is more than $10 cheaper? I'm going DVD. Just not a huge discernible difference to me. The caveat being that I'm watching on a PS3 that has graphic processors designed to do just that. Your mileage may vary on $75 Wal-Mart specials. I just don't know. Haven't seen them.

I like buying Blu Ray discs because it makes me feel like I'm a little better than my friends.
Yeah! We'll call it "Freedom"! I like that. But "freedom" rhymes with "weefrom," like "Weefrom the land of rock!" What? It's good!

I plan to skip this format and wait on the next one. I've still got a handful of VHS I haven't got around to replacing yet and am certainly not ready to purge the DVDs. And since this thread is over 2 years old and pretty much everything is still released on DVD I think I'll be fine.
