BitTorrent
« on: April 20, 2009, 05:03:40 PM »
Is this a new thing, or were you all doing this back in the day, too? I just discovered torrentz.com and all that, a couple months ago, and it's changed the way I listen to music. I still buy music, often because it's an artist I want to support or I really just want the highest quality possible on my iPod and you rarely get that on torrents. It's mainly changed the way I listen to music because I now download whole discographies instead of just songs, like I did with Kazaa (aka the last file sharing site I was on). I've downloaded all the relevant Rolling Stones and David Bowie albums (up til 1980 or so), everything by the Pixies and the Kinks (including their DREADFUL late 70s and 80s output), and completed all the holes in my Beatles and Roxy Music collections.

Any other artists or hints or...well, bit torrenting discussion points? Have you been arrested due to it?

I've been using it for a long time now. The site I've been using for the last year or so is called thepiratebay.org. That's the most popular one. It's still up, but they are in some trouble so I don't know for how much longer. As far as bittorrent clients, both Utorrent and Azureus are good.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

yeah, torrents were originally pioneered shortly after the napster-grokster line of infringement cases to find a decentralized way of distributing content (both pirated and legal) and are pretty amazing tools.

i can't use them on the school's network and if i were able to, i'd probably only use pirated options sparingly. hopefully once i'm getting paid i won't have to worry about it.
you're everybody's second home
always trying to get me alone
an easy way to lose it all
always there when all else fails
over by the west side rails

If Google and BitTorrent had a baby, it would be me.

I use Azureus (or "Vuze" as it's now called... ECK!).  I rely on it for all of my entertainment needs... TV, movies, music, etc.  I'm a bad person.
Grass stains, airplanes, anything and everything...

Thanks, for the EZTV link in that other thread. As for Vuze, this looks quite interesting. Before I go and download it, is any part of it paid? Like, the videos and media you find?

I don't think so.  I think it's just a media player built into a BitTorrent client.  When you install it you, you can choose to keep the "classic" user interface, which is just like the old Azureus BitTorrent client.  But I'm pretty sure that it's all free.
