ipod shuffle time!
« on: April 28, 2009, 05:32:27 PM »
i'm kind of obsessed with things like this:
http://www.avclub.com/features/random-rules/ and those silly notes on facebook where you shuffle your ipod and write about the songs or whatever. so let's do that here.

rules: put your ipod on shuffle - NO SKIPPING ANYTHING - write about the first 10 songs that come on.

here's mine, Tuesday April 28, 5:05 pm. 11,952 songs:
1) sleeping on the roof - the flaming lips (the soft bulletin): lots of people are really obsessed with them; I just kind of like them. this song’s nice though – a little instrumental piece that’s reminding me of the instrumental stuff that’s on david bowie “low”.
2) decades – joy division (heart & soul box set, disc 2): i recently watched a joy division documentary and listened to them a lot afterward. But I can never remember what any of the songs are called. I like this one; it’s gloomy as hell.
3) final straw – r.e.m (around the sun). r.e.m’s my favorite band, but this album really blows. I’ve only listened to it a few times.
4) are you a boy or are you a girl – the barbarians (nuggets box set). This is the 2nd time this song has come on my ipod today (I restarted the shuffle for this list). Reminds me of the time I was in Target with my dad and I heard a kid say, “mom, is that man a girl?” (referring to my dad).
5) one way or another – blondie (platinum collection, disc 1). This song rules, of course, especially the ending part. I’ve liked blondie since I was a little kid & used to sing “the tide is high” while standing atop my toy box.
6) hospital – the modern lovers (s/t). I’m not super familiar with them, but I really like “roadrunner”. He sings about girls a lot, huh?
7) what’s there to decide? – sloan (smeared). About 10 years ago I ended up buying all of their albums, but I haven’t really listened to them much since then. I don’t remember this song.
8. tomorrow – clinic (do it) I just put this album on the ipod a few weeks ago and haven’t even listened to it yet. I kind of gave up on them after realizing they’re never going to top internal wrangler
9) crest – stereolab (transient random noisebursts). “If there's been a way to build it, there’ll be a way to destroy it…”
10) dayton, ohio 1903 – randy newman (sail away). I’ve listened to the harry nilsson version more, but this one’s good too.

I've never played this game, but I'll give it a shot.

Fresh as a Daisy - Emitt Rhodes : One of my favorites. I love him, and I want him to make a comeback where he plays at small clubs so I can make requests and tell him how happy his music makes me.

Mr. Blue Sky - ELO : One of the best songs EVER written. Too bad bands today suck too much to ever write songs this good.

Postcard Blues - Verbena : This is where it becomes very evident ben*slack took over my iPod a while ago and only left some of my favorites on it. I really have no opinion on this Verbena band.

Zero- Smashing Pumpkins : See above.

All American Man - Kiss : Not one of Kiss' better songs, if you ask me.

Hello Goodbye - The Beatles : Another one of the greatest songs EVER written.

Drown - Smashing Pumpkins : That ones on Singles, so it makes it okay. But, Smashing Pumpkins just make me think of bald heads and skater kids from high school (some of which I was good friends with).

Heavy Duty - Spinal Tap : Awesome

Minority Report - Los Straitjackets : Hopeful to see Los Straitjackets sometime this summer.

Ambulance Driver - Superdrag : I've grown to really enjoy some of their tunes, but I don't know any of the names.

1. The White Stripes-Effect and Cause. I really like this song. It's one of 4 or 5 good songs from "Icky Thump."

2. Le Tigre-Deceptacon. I like Le Tigre about half of the time. This song is their quintessential, I think.

3. X-Ray Spex-Genetic Engineering. I love "Germ Free Adolescents" a whole lot, but this song is okay at best.

4. Memphis Minnie-If You See My Rooster. I get sad when I lose my rooster, too!

5. Nick Drake-One of These Things First. I'm WAY guilty of only listening to Nick Drake when I'm trying to sleep. Sorry, Nicky.

6. Be Your Own Pet-Adventure. I really like their first album. It's good teen fun. This song is good, but I like that one about kitty cats more. I never bought "Get Awkward," but I might now that I jut noticed that there are 72 new and used copies on Amazon for as low as $0.65.

7. Carl Perkins-Blue Suede Shoes. The man loves his loafers.

8. Nancy Sinatra-So Long, Babe. Good'n.

9. The Pretenders-The Phone Call. I wish I was Chrissie Hynde.

10. Regina Spektor-Braille. I like her a lot. I love "Soviet Kitsch." "Begin to Hope" was way poppier and commercial-sounding, but most of the songs ended up growing on me. My favorite things she's done are from her earlier albums "Songs" and "11.11." This one's on 11.11, but blows.
Oh my God, we're back again.

your phone's off the hook, but you're not - x; this is an okay song, i guess
sub crazy - method man; not much to say here. i like it, but it's nothing special
dogs got a bone - beta band; i've always loved the accordion in this song
cecilia ann - the pixies; duh
snake bite - herbaliser remix; actually kind of trancy - not their best stuff
aladdin sane - david bowie; i'd rather be listening to drive-in saturday
the river - bruce springsteen; i hardly ever listen to this album even though i love the boss
starstruck - the kinks; i really should listen to this album more often
it's not a prop - heatmiser; a decent song
chelsea girls - nico; i think the strings are the best thing about this song
you're everybody's second home
always trying to get me alone
an easy way to lose it all
always there when all else fails
over by the west side rails

1. The Replacements- "Till We're Nude". This is on the b-sides and rarities disc from All For Nothing/ Nothing For All. Catchy song but I usually skip it.

2. Booker T & The MG's- "Soul Limbo". Like "Soul Finger" but not. The Stax box sets are beyond awesome.

3. The Dandy Warhols- "Minnesoter". Solid song. Prefer some of their more upbeat tunes though.

4. Yo La Tengo- "What Can I Say". Um, I like this one. Not many other thoughts.

5. Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys- "Corinne Corrina". King of Western Swing indeed.

6. The Zombies- "Kind of Girl". The Zombies can do no wrong. Great song.

7. Blondie- "Picture This". Great tune from Parallel Lines. Debbie Harry is awesome.

8. Grand Champeen- "The Angel's Share". A band my boyfriend likes. Only listened to the cd once all the way through. RIYL Glossary.

9. Elvis Costello- I Hope You're Happy Now. One of my favorite EC songs. Fortunate to have seen him play it live a few times.

10. The Kinks- "Yes Sir, No Sir". Artur is amazing from start to finish. May be my fav. Kinks record.

R.E.M., "Beachball", Reveal - I downloaded R.E.M.'s entire discography last year. I don't think I know much about this song.

Dirty Pretty Things, "Deadwood", Waterloo to Anywhere - Okay song from a band I don't care to listen to. Weren't they part of that Libertines mess? Got this for free from "The Late Show."

Interpol, "Mammoth", Our Love To Admire - Good song, not so hot on the album.

Wire, "Different to Me", Pink Flag - Can't remember how this one goes, but I like Wire and Pink Flag a lot, casually I guess.

The Kills, "Hook & Line", Midnight Boom - Enjoy this song, enjoy the album. Still not one hundred percent sold on The Kills.

The Hives, "The Hives Introduce The Metric System In Time", Veni Vidi Vicious - Oh man, I love the Hives. This might not be their best jam, but it's a keeper.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, "Cowabunga", Coming Out Of Their Shells - This one's a bit more complex than the other tracks on this milestone album. I do dig the grove the Turtles are laying down, as suggested in the song.

The Pretenders, "Louie Louie", The Pretenders II - Trying to get more into the Pretenders.

The B-52's, "Juliet of the Spirits", Funplex - I'm more proud of the fact that the B-52's added another fun and relevant album to their discography so late in the game than I actually am a fan of the actual album. I liked it the one time I listened to it, not had the urge to go back again. Love the band though.

David Bowie, "Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family", Diamond Dogs - Yeah, I have no idea about this song. I downloaded the entire 70s discography of Bowie and that's a LOT to wade through.

    • Kelly Kerr and the Distractions
Re: ipod shuffle time!
« Reply #7 on: April 29, 2009, 08:34:08 PM »
Kelly Kerr and the Distractions, "Alone (on the Make-Out Couch)" Whimsical in Reverse So it pulls up one our own first. This was the first Distractions' song written. Kelly has been writing his best work since the band started, and this was the beginning of a fast climb to some good songs.

The Beatles, "I Saw Her Standing There" Anthology 1 I love how the bass drives this song.

The Beach Boys, "Barbara Ann," Beach Boys' Party I like the throwaway aspects of this single, with the talking and laughing going on in the background.

Tom Waits, "Rosie" Closing Time Early Tom Waits doesn't do it for me like it would so much later.

R.E.M. "Mr. Richards" Accelerate I was glad to see R.E.M. getting good reviews with this latest record, but it didn't really do much for me. Not as good as "Horse to Water."

The Supremes "You Can't Hurry Love" Despite all the prima donna stuff associated with Diana Ross, The Supremes are my favorite Motown group, and this is my favorite of their songs. Great bass and a lot of hope in it.

Counting Crows "Raining in Baltimore" Across a Wire It's funny how I don't like most of their music, including this tune, but I've always felt that Counting Crows, when they do it right, can create some of my favorite songs of all time.

dos "Little Doll" Justemente Tres Two basses and one voice. That's it for this band, and one of the basses is Mike Watt. The other bass and the voice is Kira, former Black Flag bassist. It makes my brain feel juicy.

The Cardigans "The Great Divide" First Band on the Moon Just re-purchased this CD recently. Great to re-visit this one as it is such great pop music.

Johnny Cash "The One on the Right Is on the Left" Funny song from the safer sounding era of Johnny Cash, but this tune is probably my favorite from that time. Very clever.

1. "Quicksand" - David Bowie. Somehow I avoided getting very deep into the Bowie catalog until the last few years. It's surprising, because he is such a profound influence on so many bands that I've loved for so many years. Or in the case of bands like Suede and Spacehog, no so much an influence as an object of direct imitation.

2. "Theme" - The Monkees. So I think the prevailing viewpoint now is that the Monkees were underrated, right? Eh. Boring.

3. "Help Me, Rhonda" - The Beach Boys. The older I get, the more I love the Beach Boys. Even the surf shit.

4. "Through My Sails" - Neil Young. Did anyone else see the DVD of his shows at the Ryman? Phenomenal.

5. "Pepper" - Butthole Surfers. How 90s is this song? I think I've heard it said that at any given point in time, the least "cool" era in relation is approximately 10 years previous. And I can totally see that with the mid/late 90s. I realize how bad so much of the music is, but i a lot of cases, I like it anyway. This is just another exhibit of how I am getting old.

6. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" - Elton John. I love this song, even though it has some of the most terrible lyrics ever. Sugarbear?

7. "Thanks for Christmas" - XTC Three Wise Men. Yes, there is still Christmas music in my iTunes. Normally I remove it after the holidays, because there is nothing more grating to me than hearing Christmas music in, like, May. Haven't gotten around to it this year.

8. "D.T." - Clinic. This band will always remind me of Ryan Norris. We did drive down to Atlanta to see them at The Earl and they played for 30 minutes and they were the headliner.

9. "M.P.E." - Public Enemy. I love PE, but they didn't really hit their stride until the next album. Rap music has come a long way, hasn't it?

10. "Answer" - Sarah McLachlan. Ha. And I thought I could get through this without anything embarassing coming up. Yes, I own a couple of Sarah McLachlan records. And yes, I do like them!
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

I had a dream about her last night because of JC's post. Well, a CD made an appearance. Not her. (darn)
