More bootlegz?
« on: May 20, 2009, 12:06:44 PM »
I'm trying to expand my collection some more, especially with newer bootlegs. If anyone has some other than these, or knows someone who might, please let me know. I can do much trading, if the original creators of the bootlegs don't mind. I figure enough time has passed for all these shows that any novelty in exclusivity has probably passed, right? If not, let me know. I don't know what the rules for trading bootlegs are and I don't want to step on toes!

I have some others that I made or acquired, usually being industrious and going outside the usual sources (to get that Lipscomb show, the dude came and met me at work at the funeral home--that probably creeped him the hell out to be trading Features bootleg CD's in a meeting room where people made burial arrangements).  I was always too lazy (and probably a little too snobby) to distribute what I had.  I see right off the bat that you need the Thunder 94 bootleg from '98, THE definitive Sergio-era Features show.  That Rocketown Show that no one is supposed to have pales in comparison.

Several of mine were never converted past minidisc, so that also adds to the problem of circulating them.  Coming to mind off hand, I have--
-an Atlanta show from the Earl in probably 04 that no one else recorded.
-The 328 show from 10/01 in which Matt broke the strings on every guitar he touched that night, finally just clapping his hands along to 33 1/3 (low quality, mini-disc only right now)
-The Lightning 100 Radio Show from summer 2005 that is un-listenable
-The February 2002 show from 12th & Porter that brianeno2 said was the best show ever--the first big show after the messageboard got rolling, I think
-January 29, 2000--the debut of Dark Room and the second time they played See You Through
-The Lightning 100 Show opening for Fluid Ounces from 5/99.  Very early Rollum show.  Debut of Kari Anne with very very different lyrics.
-A 2004 Exit/In show--one of the few soundboard recordings I have

I'm pretty sure that I have more.  I remember making another 12th & Porter show that blightman also circulated.  It's all so hazy now, and since I never uploaded any of these to iTunes, I am not in regular contact with them.

Tom Foolery might have better access to at least some of these.

I would love to remedy this, if you can. And thanks to Ben*Slack for that Rocketown show. Um, is no one supposed to have it because it's so old or because it's part of a big conspiracy that no one talks about?

-The Lightning 100 Radio Show from summer 2005 that is un-listenable
I remember this show and you saying it was unlistenable. I have always wanted to hear it, though, as I think it was the only time they played "Take You On" and...it might be the first time they played "Contrast" too. For historical purposes, it's worth hearing.

If you ever get the time to put those on a data CD, a file hosting site, or an audio CD, I would love to get my grubby paws on any of those shows. I can provide some sort of payment!

Here are some that I have that haven't been listed yet...

1999-05-09 - Broadcast on Lightning 100's "Nashville Sunday Night" show.  This was the record release show for Fluid Ounces' "In the New Old Fashioned Way"

2000-01-29 - The Boro - Opening for Fluid Ounces

2000-11-11 - Tomato Head (Knoxville, TN)

2000-12-16 - The Boro - Billed as "An Evening of Christmas Music with The Features".  The Sneaky Eaters opened, and Santa Claus himself made a guest appearance when The Features played "Psycho Santa."

2002-02-09 - 12th & Porter.  The set included "Moonlight" and "Temporary Blues"

2002-03-28 - Blue Cats - Recorded by Blightman.  This was the show at which Senryu opened for The Features.

2002-06-21 - 12th & Porter

What if we set up an FTP site on this site?  Think the band would care?

In the mean time (and as a belated celebration of my graduation back to "Junior Member"), I've attached "Down You Go" from the 5/9/1999 show.  (Wow... that was 10 years ago...)
Grass stains, airplanes, anything and everything...

Doesn't he start this one by saying something to the effect of, "I wrote the words for this one this afternoon, and I'll try to remember them.  We'll play it anyway I ngyuess."?

And when did we decide to call this one "Down You Go"?

I actually just listened to the 2005 WRLT show in the car this weekend, and it is bad.  It's not the sound quality - that's fine.  It's the mix.  Guitar is WAY too high, drums are too low and bass is literally inaudible.  It gave me a headache.

The recording that I have of Girls & Boys on WRLT Sunday night from 2006 is really poor as well.

Oddly, though, another Sunday night show that I have - De Novo Dahl from 2003 - the mix is outstanding.  Maybe it was a different sound guy?

......

I don't THINK I have that Thunder 94 show from 1998, but I'm not sure.  I don't have my collection at hand.  If I don't have it, I would love to somehow get it.  I'm not sure that I really have anything noteworthy to trade, though.  My collection pretty much consists of the complete works of Blightman and Rickman.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, <i>Party of Five</i>, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", <i>Paul's Boutique</i>, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

There are a lot of songs from 2004/2005 that I don't have any recordings of, either because they were played once or they just kept eluding people. "Manrock" "Wagon Wheels" "Harmless" "Damn The Mosquitos" are all in that category. These songs, and other lost ones, were played at...

12-5-03 @ Wall Street
4-9-04 @ Wall Street
12-29-05 @ Rhythm & Brews
3-23-06 @ Blue Cat's
9-27-06 @ Mercy Lounge

Any bootlegs of those exist? The search continues...

That bootleg TF posted is from that Nashville Sunday Night show.  It sounded great.  I actually have an audience recording of the Girls and Boys show, JC.  I don't think I ever listened to it, but I've got it.

Digsy, the 2003 show you mentioned might exist, but especially the last three are after Blightman/Rickman stopped recording shows.  I stopped recording the Features because between the other guys, I knew the recordings were being made and circulated, and it would be redundant for me to do more.  I recorded that Tucker Theater show because so many new songs were coming out that I knew I wanted copies of them.  That was also when they stopped playing a lot of them.

I doubt you'll find any of those shows you mentioned.

That's what I figured, worth a shot. Too many lost songs!

I just remembered I have early cassette recordings from I think 2000 in which they debuted Stark White Stork Approaching, Action and Mexican Gatorade, and I think a few others.  Lauren made it.  I think they covered either "Hungry Like the Wolf" or "Heard It Through the Grapevine" or maybe both.

I have a cassette from 1-12-02 that Lauren made. It's very inaudible, but good. It has "Captain Williams" on it, but you can't make out any of the words.

We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

I have a bootleg on DAT of all things from a show in Summer of 2000 at 12th and Porter. I don't think I have the technology to listen to it or convert it anymore. If anyone has what it takes to turn it into music, I'll try to find it and send it on. I'm pretty sure it also has the lifeboy set from that night if you're into that. Glossary also played but I didn't tape them.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

That was Tom Foolery's first Features' show, Keith.  I have the setlist somewhere written on the personal ad section from the Scene.  I'd like to have it, but I don't have any of the equipment to handle it.

I recorded that rocketown show from '96 with a four track recorder, and forgot all about it until last year or so when I found it and transferred it to CD.  It sounds pretty good for what the cassette has been through.  I also have a tape of a WMTS benefit show from December of 96 if I can find it!  They played Like a Virgin and a couple of Pavement songs if I remember right.
Parrish was the circus.

Let's try hosting a few shows on this site.  Check this out:

http://fmb-archive.net/shows

Our disk space is somewhat limited so we can't have an entire archive on-line at one time.  However, we could probably keep 6 - 8 shows available at one time and just rotate different shows in and out.

If you have a show you'd like to contribute, please message me, and I'll get you set up.
It's like watching your favorite TV show on DVD.

Awesome! I will start posting shows!

Does anyone have all of the 5-2-02 show? I remember someone put it online way back when, like in 2002, and I downloaded it. But I only have twelve of the twenty seven songs performed that night. Who can help a brother out?

I have a DAT in the machine room that I can donate the time on if someone want s to babysit it.

I also have a metric shit ton of these shows on CD, DAT and MiniDV... I have no idea the status of them or exactly where they are at this second either. I think I sent them to tape vault a few years ago. I'll look into it this week if people ar einterested.

I'm ridiculously interested in that! But only if it's something you're interested in, because I know how much work that video stuff can be. Finding tapes, transferring, etc.

Also, the bootlegs that are up already are awesome! Having another version of the Design and Damage Is Done, it's wonderful. Especially those recordings, which are so clear. Excellent stuff!

Erg. Yeah, it actually makes you go in and set each individual file to "downloadable" when you upload. I'll get 'em set up here in a second.

*Edit* OK that's all sorted out. There should now be a valid link beneath each song labeled "download" with a little arrow next to it. And yes, Mr. Slattery, that link in the actual player, for some God-forsaken reason, opens up dodgy pop-ups.

I discovered this nifty plugin, for Firefox users, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748 , will let you use this script, http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/16714 . It puts a download link for each track on the page so you don't have to go to each page for the download. It also creates the links even if the song isn't specified as downloadable, therefore allowing you to rape the internetz. Or some such nonsense.

Wow, nice! Thank you so much for making these public!

I did a comparison between what's been listed as available and the actual setlist from that night, and

Walk You Home
2 x 2
33 1/3
Paid to Think
Circus
Thursday

from the 5-2-02 Boro show are still MIA. Were these not recorded? Come on team, we can solve this mystery!

I'm almost positive they must have been recorded because:
A: Some of the id3 tags say X of 27. I can't see why someone would have artificially changed the song total to include unrecorded songs.
B: Some of the tags say Disc 1 or Disc 2, which would also imply a very lengthy and complete set was the source.

I'm sure it will surface as it is probably the most encountered show I've seen floating around on the internet over the years. I have a lot of hope in Peace Frog's stash, assuming such a media mogul has time for to dig around for old recordings.

Anyway, I found this a minute ago. Not sure how well known this is:

http://woxy.com/media/audio/loungeact/the_features-20070523.mp3

It's a 25 minute podcast from 2008 that includes bits of interview and performances of Temporary Blues, Exorcising Demons, Gates of Hell and Mosis Tosis live in the studio. Sounds kind of like a Features Peel Sessions, except, of course, minus John Peel.
