Hey folks,

In honor of "Some Kind of Week" I've posted my recording of The Features playing at Cannery Ballroom on 01/13/2007.  It features pretty pretty good recordings of many of the tunes off of Some Kind of Salvation and they also played a few songs I had never heard before "White Flag" and "Harmless."

There you go!

Note:  The photos I have posted I did not take.  If you took these photos or you know who did, please let me know!

drakehead, I'm glad you revived this topic.  I somehow missed it the first time around.  Good stuff!

This was almost certainly the band's first show after the old message board died for good.

Was this the first Nashville show with Mark?  I can't find any references on the old board to any local shows before this one.

I think this was the first Nashville show.  I remember there being some Chattanooga or Lexington shows before they played here.  I'm trying to remember if I was at this show or not.  I haven't downloaded it since I only have a work computer with internet these days.

Right you are!  According to the Concert Info page on the old message board, they played a few shows before playing in Middle Tennessee.  They opened for The Raconteurs in Chicago and also played a show in Louisville and Chattanooga before bringing the new act back home.

I'm trying to remember if I was at this show or not.

Really?  Then maybe I was there, too...  Now that I think about it, I remember seeing them at the Cannery Ballroom one time (I think.).  Was that the time Miss September spilled beer all over me?

Just wanted to poke my head in and hopefully provide some answers and a little background on the show.

First, this was most definitely the first Nashville show with Mark Bond.  The show they had before that was playing some sort of New Year's Eve show opening for The Raconteurs in New York City.

Second, 2006 was a shitty year for me--which is why I decided to buy a plane ticket from Dallas, Texas to Nashville, TN to see my favorite band.  To be honest, I was a little worried that, with all the troubles with the label and having a member drop out, that my favorite band wouldn't be around much longer.

Now...some Features Message Board history:

If you go through the old archives and the "timeline" of important events you will notice that a user called "hollismusic" was the last new user before the board went down.  THAT WAS ME!  :) I signed up and posted a question asking if anyone knew whether or not the band or management allowed recording at shows.
***

I e-mailed the band's management and got the okay--so it was off to Guitar Center to pick up two matching condenser microphones.  I carried my Korg Multitrack recorder in my carry-on and recieved some funny looks when I pulled it out to be X-rayed at airport security.

This was my first time in Nashville and I must say: I had an amazing time.  Country Music Hall of Fame, RCA studio tour, Music Row, coffee on Sunday in the park in front of the Parthenon--it was really, really great.

The show was a tremendous amount of fun as well.  I set up in the back where the sound guys were and one of the sound techs noticed my boom mic stand was getting knocked around a little by rambunctious fans, so he let me set my stand behind the guard barrier with the sound guys.  Awesome.

Matt and Roger were also really cool to do an interview with me after the show.  I'm sure they were exhausted.  They didn't have to do that, so I'm really grateful.

Anyway, I had a really amazing 2007 which actually ended in Nashville AGAIN for another Features show on the Mercy Lounge side on New Year's Eve.  Too cool.

That first trip to Nashville is a really great memory for me and I was happy that the recording came out half-way decent--it's like a really amazing souvenir from the trip.  I'm in law school now, so trips like that are basically totally impossible, so I'm glad I did it when I could.  Everyone I met in Nashville was incredibly friendly which also made my trip even better.

So, thanks Nashvillians!

I actually attended this show with a friend of mine; he had never seen The Features before. Needless to say, he was extremely impressed with the show and has been a big fan ever since. This was actually the last Features show I attended, but you know...I hope to end that in a few days.

Thanks, Hollis!

That's a great story, Hollis.  Thanks for sharing!  I'm curious, though... if you're from Dallas, how did you get into The Features?

I don't think you were there if I was.  This show was at Mercy, and the Cannery show was 2005.

I wish there was some great story about how I got into the Features.  At the time I was living in Austin.  I'm pretty sure it was just a chance discovery on iTunes or I might have read a review of Exhibit A in Spin magazine.  I do remember hearing "Me and the Skirts" and "Exhibit A" for the first time and the sound just "clicking" with me.  I got it instantly.  The organ sounds, the rambunctious guitar and drums, Matt's desperate and manic vocals, Roger's consistent and flawless bass--I loved it instantly and they have been my favorite band ever since.

The first time I saw them was at a club called La Zona Rosa in 2005 in Austin opening for Kings of Leon.  I went for The Features and left when KOL started.  I know now this seems a little ridiculous considering how successful KOL is now, but you have to put this in context: This was before KOL's big sound makeover with Because of the Times.  I owned Youth and Young Manhood and, to be honest, wasn't that impressed.  Again, no offense to KOL fans (I'm a believer now) but I'm from Texas and I've heard more than my fair share of "mushed-mouth southern rock" as it was described in multiple periodicals.

You know, talking about this reminds me of a conversation that I had with my girlfriend a couple of days ago.  We were talking about the Avett Brothers and about how I was surprised by a lot of the fan reaction to the tunes that have been released from the Avett's upcoming album.  It is the same thing that happened when Kings of Leon released Because of the Times: outrage.  "How could my favorite band try something new and change their sound?!?!?!"

I've never understood it.  I suppose this discussion would be better placed elsewhere, but it prompted me to say to Reb, "You know, I think The Features could do almost anything and I think I would like it."  I stand by that statement.  If you want to hear another Exhibit A, listen to Exhibit A.  The reason that bands stay around and thrive is by changing and developing their sound.  Think: The Beatles, U2, Madonna.

That said: is there a genre or style of music you would like to see The Features do?  Perhaps a concept album?

I would like to hear them explore some country sounds a little.  Some more horns would be good too.

The Beginning EP is somewhat of a concept piece, and Some Kind of Salvation is so unified that it could have become one with a few minor tweaks.  Rumor has it that the next record will be unified under one theme, but I don't know if it will be an out-and-out concept record.

Rollum, bring back the melodica!!!

I agree with Juan that a country-flavored Features song would be very interesting.

I just have to jump in and say THANKS for the recordings.  Finally, a bootleg of I Will Wander!  I requested it from Matt at a show in Chattanooga and he declined, saying they hadn't practiced it.  This almost never happens, cause they'll usually even play Armani Suede if you request it.  I wonder if there's another reason this one has dropped off the live-set repertoire...?

Every now and then my favorite bands go through a dormant phase, and then something comes along to revive their awesomeness.  I'm definitely back into rabid features-mode again, and it's one of the few things that sucks about my moving to New York...they rarely come up here.

I have to say the new song Golden Comb seems a little "country" to me, though I can't put my finger on it.  Big Mama's Gonna Whip Us Good sounds country in the title, and then it slides into a Stagecoach-like rolling guitar romp.  Finally, I found an acoustic version of Still Lost on Youtube, which has a tad more twang than the album version.  You can definitely tell our boys are from Tennessee.

Thanks again!
