2009 so far...
« on: April 02, 2009, 08:32:21 PM »
How's it been?

Yeah Yeah Yeahs "It's Blitz!" - Meh, right? I dunno, going from drums and guitar to beats and synth is hard for me. I wish the album lived up to its title.

Franz Ferdinand "Tonight" - After the stomping success of "YCHISMB" I was expecting a lot. It's okay, I just wish they hadn't turned the tight pre-release version of "Lucid Dreams" into a boring eight minute monstrosity.

Waiting for the new Decemberists album, "Hazards of Love." Should get it next Tuesday in the mail.

Don't like Animal Collective. I know you do.

Isn't Dan Deacon part of that Wham or Bang or Slam or something collective that put on the "Jurassic Park" musical?

I have completely lost touch with current "indie" music. When I worked for the Nashville Public Library I had access to tons of new cds (NPL has an excellent media buyer) but since I stopped working there I rarely listen to new bands.

I will say that I bought the new Neko Case cd and I am absolutely obsessed with it. And I picked up the new Morrissey which has some good tracks but, like most of his releases of late, is not fulfilling as a whole. Plus, I'm still pissed he cancelled his Atlanta show.

One of my former improv teachers met Morrissey, had him sign his arm, and got a tattoo of it.

I've been listening to the newest Of Montreal album a lot these days. I have not really found anything "new." Not much has come out in 2009. Although, I am looking forward to the new Silversun Pickups album next week!
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

my sentiments exactly. i feel like i've been on a steady decline on that front since i graduated college (almost) 10 (!?!) years ago.  you'd think that having a grimey's employee for a husband would help me out, but i don't really care about finding 'new' bands to listen to anymore. i'm perfectly content putting my ipod on shuffle...

i saw neko case in birmingham last night. her voice is SO incredible...great show.

I just got "Hazards of Love" by the Decemberists on Friday and I think I like it. It's definitely different. It's essentially one 58 minute long song, with a lot of the same riffs and motifs recurring throughout. So, essentially, it only feels like there are 5 or 6 different songs amidst the 17 or so tracks. That's kinda a bummer, as I would rather have 10-14 different songs than just hearing the same riff repeated throughout 5 or 6 of them. Thankfully all the repeated bits are enjoyable, so it's not like I don't enjoy it. "The Rake's Song" is by far my favorite, as it really stands out as a nearly fully formed song with a beginning, middle and end.

I will not see them on this tour, though, because I don't want to see just this album performed live. Next time, guys.

I just listened to the Sound Opinions podcast that reviewed this album and they described it as a concept album. I think that if anyone could pull of a concept album it's The Decemberits. I might just have to go out and get this record.

Also featured on the podcast was a review of the new Mastadon album. Somehow the Sound Opinions guys can make anything sound interesting. Even a metal concept album about death and the ascension to heaven. I even googled it to read a little more about it and found this via an interview with the band on Pitchfork.

"In a nutshell, basically, more or less, it's a story of, like, a quadriplegic boy who is in a wheelchair, and he leaves his earthly body behind. His spirit leaves his body, flies up into space, flies too close to the sun, burns up his golden umbilical cord that is tying him to his earthly body. He travels like into a wormhole, travels back in time to Czarist Russia where his spirit is pulled in by this Orthodox cult, called the Khlysty who are like out in the woods, dancing around fire, kind of having a seance or a divination where they're talking to dead people and spirits and stuff like that. They're trying to put the boy's spirit into Rasputin to warn him of the impending assassination on his life. And the boy enters Rasputin, and Rasputin turns into a martyr. He knows he's going to be killed but he lets it happen anyway. He finally is killed, then his spirit leaves his body with the young boy's, and they fly back through the wormhole through a crack in the sky. And he kind of brings the boy back to his body where the boy is completely healed and back to normal.

That's pretty much like the gist of it, I mean, you know, give or take a few things."

Umm, wow. Just wow.

What's the deal with Phoenix? I had never heard of them before they were on SNL a couple weeks ago. I liked the songs I heard so I downloaded their upcoming album ("Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" or something, right?) and it's okay. Where'd they come from, besides France. I know they're French. But they have around four albums and I find it hard to believe I've overlooked them for years. Anywho, the album is very "Satanic Panic in the Attic"y, so...it could be okay. Have to listen to it a couple more times.

Get their live album (30 Days Ago Live or something like that). I was also surprised that they were on SNL. I saw them play at Grimey's a couple years ago.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

The most relevant albums this year so far are:

Of Montreal-Skeletal Lamping
Harlem Shakes-Technicolor Health

I don't have the Animal Collective CD yet, and I don't want to talk about the YYY's one.
Oh my God, we're back again.

2009 confounds me. the older i get, the less i care about new music.

the only sounds which tickle my furry brain are ones from many moons ago, and the only semi-new band that i can get down with is beach house.

the electric slide sequencer noise jams of today confuse me, and the impending grunge revival (which is already here coughsubliminalmessagingcough) merely annoys me.

i like the new features record, though (or at least 3/4 of it).

no black dice fans in here? i'm surprised. (not terribly)

i don't really like the new animal collective despite numerous attempts from people to make me like it. people are flabbergasted when i tell them i liked strawberry jam better.

eh, it took me a minute to get into them. i might be surprised sometimes when someone tells me they don't like them, but i know that the first few times i listened to them i couldn't hear the melodies or rhythms through the seeming cacophony and wrote them off as masturbatory. they're still masturbatory, but i like feels and strawberry jam now.

black dice is even worse about their pretension and i just plain can't stand them.

I totally agree, except for the "I like them now" part. I've tried listening to the new album and, bleh, I just...it's boring. It's really boring. I think they're just the definition of "not my type of mysic." I'm the guy that almost teared up with joy when "What's the #?" by Apples in Stereo was played at the UCB Theatre last night. That's music!

The Airborn Toxic Event.  This was a surprise as I usually hate anything and everything that would associate itself with Carson Daly, but the record is AWESOME.  Not only that, but they seem to be pretty amazing live as well (just from watching the television).

Usually, I don't like bands from L.A., but these cats sound pretty solid.
